Dontá Wilson ’97
Dontá Wilson earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Management from UNC Charlotte in 1995 and an MBA from the University of Maryland in 2005. He is also a graduate of the Tuck Executive Program at Dartmouth College and the Truist Banking School at Wake Forest University. Dontá is Chief Consumer and Small Business Banking Officer and a member of the executive leadership team for Truist Financial Corporation.
He began his career at BB&T, now Truist as a college student in 1995 and then upon graduating, he spent most of his career leading mergers and acquisitions. He was promoted to BB&T, now Truist executive leadership team in 2016 as the Chief Client Experience Officer post serving many years in Regional and State President roles. He later became Chief Digital and Client Experience Officer in 2018. In December 2019, he continued to serve in the role of Chief Digital and Client Experience Officer when BB&T Corporation and SunTrust Banks merged to create Truist Financial Corporation. In 2022, he became Chief Retail and Small Business Banking Officer and in 2023, expanded his responsibility for all consumer as the Chief Consumer and Small Business Banking Officer.
Dontá has remained involved with UNC Charlotte as an alumnus by joining the Belk College Advisory Board and recently the University’s Board of Trustees. He was the keynote speaker for Belk College’s Spring CEO Speaker Series in January 2020.
Dontá has been an influential partner in UNC Charlotte’s relationship with Truist and was instrumental in Truist’s $5.3 million gift for the Truist Institute for Student Success. Dontá also has increased his personal commitment to the University by pledging $1 million to establish the Dontá Wilson Endowed Scholarship. In spring of 2024, the University’s Phase XVI residence hall was named in his honor.
Dontá’s wife, Bonika, is a passionate entrepreneur, inspiring author, philanthropist and dedicated advocate for community empowerment. She had an achieved career in corporate america before launching and selling several businesses. Now she spends most of her time serving on community boards and managing the family foundation.
Dontá and Bonika reside in Charlotte, N.C., and have three children.
